ECOVALUE
Article 663 of the Regulations to the Organic Environmental Code authorizes the use of financing mechanisms aimed at ensuring that waste is given the most appropriate destination from technical, environmental, and socio-economic perspectives.
“Ecovalue is the contribution that every tire owner must pay to guarantee the proper treatment of end-of-life tires.”
In Ecuador, Ecovalue was introduced as a financial mechanism to support the comprehensive management of used tires—covering collection, transportation, and recycling. It adds circular value to tires while enabling a range of complementary administrative processes that document and verify proper management. Additionally, it supports public awareness campaigns that emphasize the importance of appropriate waste handling.
Ecovalue is aligned with the principles of the Circular Economy:
- Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Those who generate waste are responsible for ensuring its proper treatment.
- Cost Transfer Mechanism: Ecovalue is passed from the tire producer or importer to the final consumer.
How is Ecovalue Calculated?
It is essential that Ecovalue be itemized on invoices. This transparency helps consumers identify the cost associated with responsible waste management and fosters awareness about proper tire disposal. It also ensures that all actors within the End-of-Life Tire (ELT) recycling value chain are held accountable for compliance with national management standards.
Benefits of Ecovalue
- Finances the logistics chain involved in tire recycling
- Supports the development of the recycling industry
- Contributes to social and community initiatives
- Strengthens environmental awareness
- Promotes responsible production and consumption
Ecovalue helps secure a more sustainable future—we are all co-responsible.
SEGINUS is financed through Ecovalue, which represents the cost associated with the responsible management of used tires.
Below are the updated Ecovalue rates, effective as of August 1, 2023:
Note: In case of collection and recycling of tires weighing more than 150kg outside the approved subheadings, the charge will be made by weight.
